Source, evidence, status and history are shown separately so one signal never stands in for another.
The four layers

01 · SOURCE
Who created the record?
Show the issuing organisation or holder clearly. Organisation-confirmed and holder-added records must remain distinct.

02 · EVIDENCE
What supports it?
Show issuer assertions, recorded signatures and relevant confirmation signals without collapsing them into one badge.

What is true about it now?
Show the current lifecycle state clearly.

04 · HISTORY
What changed over time?
Keep corrections, reviews, supersessions and revocations attached to the record.
Status model
Six states. Clear meaning.
- Active
- Current record.
- Pending claim
- Issued, but not yet claimed.
- Expired
- Its validity period has ended.
- Superseded
- A newer record replaced it.
- Under review
- A material issue is being reviewed by the issuer.
- Revoked
- The issuer withdrew the record.
Provenance & signatures
What a recorded signature means.
A cryptographic signature is recorded when the issuer creates the record. It anchors the origin and content of that issued version.
It does not mean Arrota re-checks the issuer on every visit. Later changes are represented through the record’s status and history.

History
History keeps changes visible.
A field changes while the previous value remains recorded.
A material issue is flagged while the record remains visible.
A newer record replaces the old one while both remain connected.
Limitations
What Arrota cannot establish.
- Issuer facts
- Arrota shows who issued or confirmed a record. The organisation remains responsible for the facts it asserts.
- Recorded signatures
- A signature anchors what was issued. It does not independently prove the underlying facts were correct.
- Holder-added evidence
- Holder-added material remains distinct unless an organisation later confirms it.
- Verifier decisions
- Arrota provides source, evidence, status and history. The final decision remains with the verifier.
